The new job hunting?
Posted Dec. 24, 2008 by Gabriel Hurley
By the end of January, I have to find a new job. I've been thinking a lot about how to go about this.
I've also been reading Seth Godin and Chris Brogan and other "thought leaders" in the field of marketing and communication. "Tell a story" they say. "Create something people can identify with." And what is finding a job if not marketing yourself.
Well let's try this on for size: In the next 31 days, I'm going to find a job by telling a story. The story I'm going to tell is about me finding a job by creating a website about me finding a job and leveraging the power of social networks and communication. And I'm going to do all that in a time when the economy is collapsing and most people would be thankful just to be employed at all.
Better to write my story than have it written for me. If I inspire others then this might even become job hunting 2.0 (beta).
What I have now: A domain (gabrielhurley.com) and myself.
What I'm going to end up with:
- A job that is meaningful;
- A job that challenges me;
- A job that I am passionate about;
- A job in the Bay Area;
- A job with a reasonable salary.
I'll be documenting this and the updates will be coming rapidly, so stay tuned. You get to be the first to cheer me on! Time to root for the underdog!
